SEO
Optimization Organizations
Search
engines do not all have same ethics, standards,
business practices and user agreements, therefore there are no specific
standards that govern the practice of optimizing Web sites for search
engine visibility.
Some SEO
organizations attempt to keep an eye on what their (SEO
Consultants) members are doing and will discipline or even ban
members that break the organization's code of professional conduct.
Other organizations take a hands off approach and let the individual
search engines handle their own enforcement.
In the
end, protection for SEO clients is lacking and it's a buyer beware
market.
Catching
SEOs who spam and harrass the search engines is difficult since
the SEO optimization organizations are not aware of all the sites
they optimize. To make it more confusing, SEOs are not all in agreement
about what constitutes spamming and unprofessional conduct. One
SEOs corporate Web building is another's domain spam. Link building
can be viewed as spam when the connection between the two sites
isn't easily understood. Relevancy is hard to determine.
The line
between spamming search engines and building a legitimate, valuable
Web site is blurred. Some SEO
organizations or even search engines themselves, will overlook one
type of advanced and subtly implemented spam while other techniques
are passed. Google for instance may penalize sites for a site that
appears to be deliberately optimized. However, we know that most
sites that appear in search engine results have in fact, been optimized
to rank.
SEO organizations
have value however, because they can provide some assurance that
the SEO practitioner is legitimate
and will carry out the work. The organization can't guarantee that
your site won't get banned by a search engine. That search engines
have their own set of rules and even legitimate optimization can
result in deletion from the index.
Many SEO
buyers have trusted fly-by-night webmasters and SEO companies who
will take extreme measures to get their client listed. Often these
Webmasters don't understand how to optimize and they've made the
mistake of blindly promising top ten ranks which in reality they
cannot guarantee. Keep in mind that members in SEO organizations
are not to guarantee top rankings. Guaranteeing rankings causes
legal action and spam activities that blacken the reputation of
the entire SEO community.
Very often
the legitimate SEO
specialists have to work for clients who have made the mistake
of pursuing something-for-nothing schemes with Web masters and we
have to clean up the mess afterward.
